20 cool water sports and activities to try this summer

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just going on a well-deserved vacation, water sports and activities are a great way to get moving, have fun and enjoy the great outdoors.

Swimming, surfing, snorkeling, and all the other ways to get active in H2O also have serious benefits for the mind and body. Not only do water sports decrease your risk of chronic disease (like heart disease and diabetes), but they have also been shown to provide mental health boost. I mean, come on, how can you not feel instantly calm with the sound of waves or the lapping of a nearby lake?

All of this was certainly true for the former professional surfer. Jessi miley-dyer, responsible for the competition for the World Surf League. “I really believe that water sports are cleansing. I always feel like a better version of myself when I get out of the water, ”she says. “I started surfing when I was young and I remember loving being at the beach. Today, surfing has become an escape; when i’m surfing i don’t have to worry about anything else in my life or the world.

However, you don’t have to ride major waves to reap these benefits. Anything that gets you in the water works, says Miley-Dyer. Regardless of your comfort level (or your interest in getting the adrenaline pumping), one of the following water sports is guaranteed to suit your mood and lifestyle.

1. Sailboard

      Difficulty: Moderate

      Windsurfing is one of those sports that you can definitely try if you are a beginner as long as you take a course at a windsurfing or sailing school. (There is a lot of equipment on the way!) Check out the Cal Sailing Club for more details on how to try out this fun game.

      2. Surfing

        Difficulty: Moderate

        If you’ve got a crush on the surf videos on your Instagram feed, this summer is a great time to catch your own waves. Have you never surfed? Most seaside communities have surf schools that offer lessons for all skill levels.

        Otherwise, find friends who are comfortable in the waves to take you out. “It always helps when it’s not just you, because getting started can be frustrating,” says Miley-Dyer. “It’s like having a gym buddy to support and motivate you, who can also help you out with any problems.”

        3. Nautical

          Difficulty: Beginner

          If you read the “beginner” status and quickly mentally notice that you don’t actually own a boat, don’t worry. You can find all kinds of rentals in just about any community near a body of water – and if you don’t want to take on waves (don’t blame yourself there!), You can always go. for a lake or a bay.                   This activity is Great popular on the lakes, and for good reason: it’s not as technically difficult as wakeboarding, but it’s still just as fun. (Yes, instead of standing you just need to kneel!) Sure, it takes a friend and a boat to pull you out, but from there you can pretty much learn on the spot.

                  8. Snorkeling

                    Difficulty: Beginner

                    Do not dare to sleep while snorkeling, especially if you are visiting a picturesque new beach. It really is the best way to get a glimpse of the aquatic life below without disturbing the ecosystem. If you are staying at a resort, call and ask if they provide free equipment for guests (they often do). Alternatively, you can hire snorkeling basics at most water sports stores. Do not forget the sunscreen safe for reefs!
