Letter: first name base

I saw the “Kelly for Senate” signs popping up all over town and started wondering, which Kelly is this?

In my 50-plus years in Alaska, I’ve met many politicians, so the names that came to mind were former senator Tim Kelly – but he died several years ago – and the Kelly brothers of Fairbanks, Mike and Pete, also former lawmakers. There was even a Tom Kelly who ran for governor in 1978. Could this be one of them? No.

Turns out Kelly isn’t a last name. It’s the name of a person I’ve never met or even seen. We’re not on a first name basis, unlike Don (Young), or Lisa (Murkowski), or Ted (Stevens). But his last name, Tshibaka, reminds me of Harrison Ford’s “Star Wars” sidekick, Chewbacca, the seven-foot-tall Wookiee who can’t talk.

I heard that Donald Trump didn’t like Lisa because she was more loyal to her oath of office and the Constitution than to him, so he chose Ms. Tshibaka to replace her.

No thanks. I’ll stick with someone I actually know by first name.
